Is it necessary to use a kiln to fire ceramics?

I want to make ceramics at home, but I don't have a kiln! Is it possible to fire ceramics without a kiln? Along with that, do you know where I can buy ceramics clay? Would Joanns or Michaels have it? Thanks! :)
